CHAPTER 11
Charlie smiled at Kellerman and joined Stormy at a table.
"Interesting outfit,â her co-worker pointed out, a grin on her face.
"They didn't have much available in my size at the gas station across the street."
"Sorry your first day had to be so crazy. Next time you'll be ready with a go-bag at work. We're used to last minute assignments."
"This is normal? I thought A Group had only been around for a year or so?"
Her features dimmed. "Not here." Stormy nodded in the direction of Merle who was wrapping up his night shift by serving breakfast to guests.
Charlie had a lot she wanted to ask, but work with a security clearance had its problems. They'd have to wait until they were in a secure environment before openly talking about anything related to A Group. "Oh, sorry." She focused on her bagel and fruit.
"No harm. No foul." The two women ate in silence and watched as the men from their team went for seconds at the buffet.
"We're out of here in five, folks." Commander Orr dumped his empty paper plate in the garbage and set his mug in the self-busing area.
Only a few other motel guests were eating breakfast that early in the day, so they had the room mostly to themselves.
Kellerman smiled and nodded as he passed them both with an empty tray and headed out to the parking lot. Orr and Demarco stood near the floor-to-ceiling window that looked out over an overgrown lawn. The front end of their bus was visible to the far left.
Although the two men were engaged in deep conversation, the arrival of more guests created loud chatter, which drowned out anything she might've been able to overhear.
Last night had been strange, and she didn't yet trust Kellerman or Demarco. Something about what she'd witnessed didn't make any sense. She glanced at Stormy. Would the older petty officer be someone she could share her thoughts with? For now she felt removed from her team, as if she were a stranger in her new assignment.
"Come on," said Stormy, picking up her tray. "Let's get out of here."
Gladly, Charlie glommed onto the woman. Lisa Storm had been the kindest of them all, so she wanted to make every effort to be kind in return.
"Do you have any family?" Stormy asked as she dumped her breakfast garbage into the bin.
"Yes." The question caught her off guard. "I've got a brother, Chad. And my parents. What about you?"
"So you're not married?" She scanned Charlie from head to toe.
The sweatsuit probably made her think Charlie wasn't exactly a catch. Her face grew hot. "No."
Stormy nodded. "Well, no rush, you're young."
"Maybe someday down the road," she said. To her, a husband and children were more than 'down the road,' they were miles and miles away, and she had plenty of road to travel alone until she reached them.
They made their way amicably out the front door. The bus's engine rumbled as it idled in the lot.
Charlie spied Orr and Demarco still inside talking near the window.
